Light, soft pearls (sabudana) for kheer and khichdi. Sago, or sabudana, are small white pearls that turn soft and see-through when cooked. They're light on the stomach and a classic for kheer, khichdi and sweet drinks.

  • Also called: Sabudana
  • Sizes: 150g and 500g
  • Packed in: Resealable kraft pouch with a window
  • Keeps: 8 to 12 months once opened, sealed, in a cool, dry place

Better value: the 500g pack works out 28% cheaper per kg than the 150g pack.

How to enjoy it

Rinse the pearls and soak them in water before cooking. Then simmer them in milk with sugar and cardamom for sago kheer, or cook them with potatoes and peanuts for a savoury khichdi.

Good to know

Is sago really a seed?
Not quite. Sago pearls are made from plant starch, which is why they cook up soft and see-through.

How do I know they're cooked?
They turn from white to see-through. If there's still a small white dot in the middle, give them a little longer.

Which size should I buy?
The 500g pack is better value per kg. The 150g pack is a good size to try first, or to add to a gift.
